Premenstrual Syndrome, also known as PMS is something experienced by many women anytime prior to menstruation and it disappears after a few hours when the menstrual flow begins. The condition is characterised by diverse symptoms such as breast tenderness, headache, abdominal pain, mood swings, irritability, social withdrawal, skin breakouts, bloating, weight gain, constipation or anxiety. PMS for some women can be a few days or others it can last for a couple of weeks.

The actual causes of PMS are not clear but there are several theories that suggest the probable causes. At the surface of it, it’s mainly caused by hormonal imbalance in the body. Several other factors can contribute to such an imbalance and these include but not limited to metabolism, hormones, calcium, environment or a combination of two of multiple of such.

Since PMS is as a result of hormonal imbalance in the body, Chinese medicine and acupuncture offers very good alternatives to modern medicine and changes in lifestyle when it comes to combating PMS. With these two, the imbalances can be corrected and long term relief for PMS to be achieved.

Acupuncture works by removing energy blockages and enhancing the blood flow between the body and the vital organs. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are particular energy types whose imbalance will create different kinds of effects in the body. Acupuncture aims to restore the imbalance in those particular energy types to reduce the effects of PMS on women.

Acupuncture works by providing deep relaxation which will in turn calm the mind. In addition to this, when it is combined with the traditional Chinese herbs, it will regulate the flow of energy and substances throughout the body. As a result, the body’s natural functions will be restored and optimum equilibrium reestablished. These will bring a relief to most of the PMS symptoms experienced by women.
