Endometriosis & Acupuncture

Endometriosis refers to a female hormone disorder, whereby growth of cells from the lining of the uterus, or endometrium, occurs in other parts of the body. These endometrium cells can migrate and attach themselves to the fallopian tubes, ligaments, the internal pelvic area, the bowel or bladder. Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture can be a good addition to any management plan.

Endometriosis is associated with symptoms such as back pain, premenstrual spotting, abdominal pain, vomiting, rectal bleeding, painful defecation, sciatica, urinary frequency amongst others. Any of these symptoms will be troubling and a combination of more than two will be extremely painful. If not diagnosed and treated quickly, endometriosis has the potential of preventing a woman from getting pregnant thus being a precursor to infertility.

In an ideal world, a woman experiencing her periods should never feel any pain. It is more realistic for women to experience some period pain, although not severe.  In good health, a woman’s period flow should be fresh, rich in color, be in sufficient volume and shouldn’t have clots. If this is not the case plus they have severe period pain, then it could be an indicator that the woman is experiencing endometriosis.

Though there are solutions for the endometriosis symptoms in modern medicine, Chinese herbal medicine in combination with acupuncture have proved to be beneficial for treating or managing endometriosis and easing the accompanying symptoms such as painful menstruation.

Whereas Chinese medicine is effectively used in balancing the hormone levels in the body, Acupuncture is used to enhance the flow of blood and energy throughout the body. In using acupuncture to treat endometriosis, it is best practice to allow around three months or cycles to balance the hormones in the body.

For greater success, dietary support and stress management are helpful since these influence the hormone balance in the body and assist the effectiveness of using acupuncture in treating endometriosis.

When administered in the right manner, acupuncture will help manage endometriosis and all the associated symptoms including heavy and painful periods, irregular cycles, digestive upset and in the process enhancing a woman’s fertility.
